Cot or Bassinet?

Posted on

-

When you have a brand new family member, it's an exciting and joyous time - but also a confusing one. When it comes to furniture, there are so many things to consider: change table, play pens, prams, rockers - the list goes on.

But nothing will be as important as this simple choice: cot or bassinet?

Anyone who has or has had babies living with them knows how important sleep is. Because if baby gets a good sleep, you do too - and (sadly) vice versa.

But sleep quality isn't the only thing to consider. Let's take a look.

Cot versus bassinet

Basically, either choice is perfectly safe, even for a newborn. It has been shown that, although a newborn can look dwarfed in a big cot, they are safe, suitable and comfy for babies to sleep in.

But as a cot is a lot bigger than a bassinet, your choice may in fact be based on your nursery or house size.

Bassinets

Bassinets are also more portable than cots, so they can easily be moved from room to room, and even house to house if necessary. They are also easier to put baby down in or pick baby up from, which is a genuine consideration in the days and weeks immediately after birth - particularly if, for example, you've had a caesarean. The hood or cover of a bassinet can also be comfy or convenient to pull over its precious cargo.

Cots

Cots have their benefits as well. Because they are bigger and more permanent, they are often sturdier and will be suitable as baby grows. Using a cot from an early age can also make it easier for a baby to transition to a toddler bed, but a cot can therefore be more expensive.

Indeed, bassinets are only suitable until the baby reaches a certain size and weight, so while it is a cheaper purchase today, it will mean another sleeping option for baby just a few months down the track.

In the end, you will weigh up all of the pros and cons and pick a solution that really works for you and baby - and that might mean a choice purely for aesthetic reasons or personal preference. But when you do make your decision, double check that it meets all the safety requirements and is of high quality craftsmanship, so that both you and baby can sleep soundly.
